DARE TO BE DIFFERENT
by ILN
03 OCT 07

The Venue, 17 The High Street, Melrose Arch

For far too many years polite society frowned upon anyone who dared to be different or who stood out from the crowd. It was all about safety in numbers and speak when you are spoken to and get that informal uniform on so you all looked the same. Conformity was the watch word and if you tried to break out from the pack, and break out you had to, the pack just moved away from you and you were at best eccentric and at worst dangerous. Thankfully, how times have changed! It is those who can think differently who are winning all the prizes now. Steve Jobs and his ideas factory at Apple are taking the market place by storm and have even taken on those stalwarts of innovation, the Japanese electronic giants at their own game and left them in disarray!

The world of music will never be the same again – iTunes and the eponymous iPod are great examples of thinking the unthinkable.

We are delighted to have Mmatshilo Motsei who through her work as a community organizer, poet and author, has traveled extensively through Africa, Europe, USA and Australia and has received numerous awards including the International Human Rights Award in New York as well as the United Nations Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for her work in involving men as part of the solution to violence against women. She is also the author of the book The Kanga and Kangaroo Court, Reflections of the Trial Rape of Jacob Zuma.  Now if that is not daring to be different in a male dominated society then nothing is.

Alongside Mmatshilo we have Deshun Deysel who through her belief "No matter how high the mountain there is always a way up!" has seen her take her childhood dream of climbing Mount Everest and turning it into a reality. Apart from being an accomplished mountaineer she is also a highly acclaimed speaker, trainer and facilitator.  How many of us can say that we have dared and accomplished such amazing feats?

2 world class innovators who have not just done things differently but they think, act and deliver differently. For a glimpse of that world of difference, book early and perhaps leave the suit, tie, cufflinks and brogues at home – just for tonight, and for a change, let’s not leave the man at home tonight either, bring him along too!
