NO NON-CENTS LEADERSHIP
by ILN
29 AUG 07

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off work we go.

Don’t we all wish that it was as easy as a fairytale to find that pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow whenever we waived a magic wand?

In the real world, especially in South Africa, making your fortune in the business of banking is no easy task.   Just look around - interest rates are on an upsurge, fuel prices continue to fluctuate and the cost of living is getting harder and harder to keep up with.

The question is, “how does a top South African financial mastermind make it all look so easy?”

Running one of the largest financial institutions in the country is a  challenging position for ANY inspirational leader. It’s all about managing people well, understanding and responding to the needs of your customers and generating enough revenue to sustain your business and keep your shareholders happy.

Paul Harris, CEO of the FirstRand Banking Group shows all the qualities of a true leader. We can ALL take a page out of his book and look more closely at what our true leadership traits are and if they stack up with the best. At FirstRand their philosophy is that leaders are there to facilitate, enable, and assist; asking the right questions and to getting a collective wisdom out of the system as a whole.

This astuteness can lead you on a path of greatness.

As you look back at your leadership, are respected for who you are and what you stand for as an individual?  It’s not just about running a successful ship but weathering all the storms with your crew confidently manning the decks. If all your people are empowered then the ground has been laid for good decision making. Standing at the helm of a ship also means embracing your own interests to create a true sense of balance.

Apart from being CEO of one of the largest banking institutions in South Africa, Paul has other interests that span the arts and culture through to sports.  He has learned about classical music and has bought a share in the Everard Read art gallery, whilst also becoming a director of SA Cricket and SA Golf.

“You have to consciously get other interests in life and find a balance that way” says Paul.

We would be delighted for you to join us as we get up close and personal with this titan of banking. Come and find out what his personal views are on the future of South African leadership and what invaluable lessons he has learnt along the way.

So let’s ask this Master and Commander of leadership to give us his take on weathering the high seas of the monetary world…
