IT'S REIGNING WOMEN
by Lyndie Visser
01 AUG 07

On August 9, 1956 20,000 women from all parts of South Africa marched on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to present Prime Minister Strijdom with a petition protesting the extension of the pass laws to African women. When he failed to appear, they left bundles of petitions containing more than 100,000 signatures at the Prime Minister's door.

It is difficult to pin down the particular issues that South African women faced in 1956 and this still proves difficult today.  But, we have moved on, we have taken that step forward and now women are more aware and willing to talk openly and be heard in modern day South Africa.   Women are faced with a wide range of issues such as domestic violence, child abuse, HIV/AIDS, unemployment gender discrimination as well as poverty. It is against this background that women have organised themselves within the community to take up these challenges.

Inspired Leaders would like to celebrate Women’s Month by bringing two of South Africa’s most inspirational women of our time to tell us about their journey.

Both are from very different backgrounds and we will find out what obstacles they faced and the challenges they came across as they started to head up what was then a particularly wobbly corporate ladder for women. Was it a constant battle of the sexes leaving many a bruised male ego in their wake? Or was it a matter of pure blood, sweat and tears that got them to the top in a hugely male dominated society. In turn how did this effect the women in their respective communities and cultures – were they shunned or embraced for their efforts to make it through a gender mine field?

By sharing their defining moments and those of the women leaders they have crossed paths with, they will inspire, motivate, empower and inform us and leave us in awe of women and their remarkable achievements.

We are delighted to have Wendy Luhabe, who was identified as early as 1997 by the World Economic Forum as a “World Leader of the Future”. In the subsequent decade she has distinguished herself as social entrepreneur and as one of the most influential businesswomen in South Africa.

Alongside Wendy we also have the pleasure of Lisel Erasmus Kritzinger, author and educator. As the creator, compiler and editor of Inspirational Women at Work, who better to share with us her stories - “I heard such powerful and moving stories from South African women - women sharing their life stories with confidence, and by doing so, inspiring all those who had the privilege of listening to them. Storytelling is after all an African tradition, and one of the most effective ways of passing the message on.”

Gentlemen, we dare you to come along and enter a world where most men fear to tread. We have no doubt you will be inspired by these two amazing ladies and held in high regard by your female colleagues, in fact, bring one with you and show your support. You never know, they may just be able to answer those questions you have always wanted to ask but have not dared to for fear of being knocked off the ladder...
